Taught in Spanish, the course focuses on reading and analyzing works from Latin American women writers. Examines fiction by and about women from varied sociocultural backgrounds to discover the diversity and the commonality of female experience in different geographical regions. Students examine the narrative strategies employed by these writers in interpreting social, political, cultural, and religious forces that create gender, class, and ethnic barriers in Latin American society.
Reflective Course Narrative
I took this course with Dr. Maria Zielina. The reason I took this course was because I had taken Spanish 202 with Dr. Zielina and it was such a pleasure being in her class. She had a wonderful way of teaching and had mind-opening opinions. I was very excited to take this course and actually understand the majority of what she was saying. In my 202 class I wasn't at the same level of Spanish so I wasn't able to fully comprehend all of what was taught. In this course we read works by Mastretta, Bombal, Garro, etc. We were able to study works of various women from Latin American countries. We studied social status, race, feminism, etc. We wrote four papers in this class and also had two presentations. This was a very challenging course, but I definitely enjoyed it and was not let down by Dr. Zielina. Her I have included one of the essays that I worte for this course.
